Ambx (madcatz) wont work with any steam games

I can't play any games that are on steam. Steam does not like ambx for some reason is their a trick to get steam games to work?

Hi nonstickrudy,

welcome to the forums. Actually amBX should work with Steam games, and it does so for me.
Could you try to do the following for me?: Go to the Steam settings (right click to the tray icon, then left click "Settings", then to the tab "IN-GAME", then untick "Enable Steam Community In-Game", then click "OK" and have another try with a Steam game.

To get this right, this should not be the solution of cause, but I'd like to find out whether the Steam overlay might cause problems here.

Also, did you check whether the games appear in the the "Software" section of amBX control panel and are activated there?

Some games (Steam or otherwise) have issues (like RAGE) but if the disc version works so should the Steam version... I've had amBX working with Counter Strike, Portal, Portal 2, Left 4 Dead etc on Steam as well as my Steam copy of Dirt 3.

Wow, so you guys still haven't fixed this issue? You know how long it's been since I posted the same issue? MONTHS!

It's almost like you're telling people to go download pirated copies.

Anyways, I thought there was a solution somewhere. Had something to do with running the steam game through your desktop. Look up something to do with Steam and Tridef not working. It happened to most 3D software too. But as usual, most software have fixed this problem and amBX hasn't.

What games are you having problems with and what OS are you using?

Or is it every game you've tried on Steam?

As I said I only have issues with RAGE but that's a problem with the actual game and nothing to do with Steam.

The only game that worked was fallout 3, games like killing floor, half life 2, portal, Skyrim, serious Sam 3, deus ex, grand theft auto, etc don't work. I am on win 7 64 bit

I'm on 32 Bit using Win 7 Pro... that could be the issue or it could be the version of direct x you're using or something else entirely - The only Steam Game I have that doesn't work on amBX is RAGE and even that works for the cinematics at the start but others that have a disc copy say RAGE does that for them as well so I think that's a game issue.

I'll go through my games soon as I haven't played many for a while and they may not work after one of the updates so I'll check when I have some time

I know Portal 2, The Witcher (Enhanced), APB and Counter Strike : Source work fine as I've played those recently... will check Portal first as that's one you have - will do it tomorrow though as it's getting late.

Thanks buddy it seems like all the valve games dont like my ambx very much. It will show the valve logo then give me the infamous hl2 error. When I dont run the lights it works perfectly fine.

Okay Half Life 2 works and so does Portal (at least for me anyway).

A lot of people are having problems with Skyrim so I doubt that's a Steam only issue... but I don't own the others you mention so I can't test them.

1. Create a shortcut on your desktop with TASKKILL.EXE which is placed here:
C:\windows\system32

2. Right click on a shortcut -> Properties -> Target Commands
and change the line:

C:\Windows\System32\taskkill.exe

for this:

C:\Windows\System32\taskkill.exe /im ambxfxgen.exe


It allows you to kill ambxfxgen.exe process without using task manager, quick and easy.


3. Create a shortcut on your desktop with AMBXFXGEN.EXE which is placed here:
C:\Program Files\amBX\Gaming FXGen\win32

When your game doesn't run (like Steam games etc.) try these steps:

1. Run first shortcut to kill ambxfxgen.exe (which mainly causes problems with games).
2. Start your game.
3. Minimize to desktop and run the second shortcut to run again ambxfxgen.exe (and activate amBX)
4. Maximize your game

Worked for me with all Steam games I had.

Steam games work fine here, what games are you trying to run with amBX? Are you running something like MSI afterburner,fraps,rivatuner in the background?

It was my evga precision that was not letting me run the games everything is working perfect now. Thanks for the input everyone!!!
