Hi guys,

I just got my AMBX starting kit, and I want to install the Aurora Synesthesia.
But i have no idea how i should do it.
I'm using windows 7 32-bit. and everything is working fine in games.

This is what I did:
http://www.fmod.org/
download.
and got the latest stable version.

Now the only thing that is on my PC is something called FMOD Profiler.
But i can't do anything with that.

How do i enable the nice music lights, everyone is talking about?
Is it the right program i've downloaded?

Hi Samiej6,

I'm afraid thats not the right program to download (so you can uninstall that). All that you need to know about FMOD is that AS uses it, so you don't need anything from their site. Just go to page 2 (or 3) of this topic and you'll see a download at the end of one of my posts with something like "Alpha 1.04" on the end.

Download the zip, and extract it to your program files or desktop if you prefer. To run the program and get the like effects, just double click the Aurora Synesthesia.exe file.

Sorry for the confusion

To Millmoor and others,

I am right in my assumption that the tooltips cause Aurora to reinitialise. For some reason they change the desktop making it impossible for AS to effectively read the screen pixels. In the current version, any attempt to resolve this is delayed to the next frame, thus making the lights go off momentarily. I've since changed the system so that if it is unable to get screen pixels, it will reinitialise and try again immediately. With any luck this will be sufficient to prevent the sudden blackouts but people will have to test once I've got Alpha 1.05 out the door.

Re: (Unofficial) Aurora Synesthesia - Alpha 1.05

Postby Zodius » Thu Sep 17, 2009 8:36 pm

Glad to hear it. Well with any luck this version will be even better :D

Aurora Synesthesia - Alpha 1.05.zip
To install, download the zip and extract it, double-clicking on the exe to start it up.
(682.69 KiB) Downloaded 4440 times

I've kept the two current command-line switches (these being -a for Vibrant Aurora Only, and -s for Immersive Synesthesia Only).

I hope you all enjoy it and the changes that I've made. I would really appreciate feedback from people who have had issues with the previous version to see whether this version resolves it.
I know for one thing it will resolve the music volume issue, as not only are there manual options, there is also the adaptive mode that I now prefer over manual that I've made it the default mode :D.

Just a refresher so people don't have to read back to see what this new version does.
  • Aurora modes are now in their own section where you can select between Average, Vibrant and Disable settings.
  • Synesthesia modes are now in their own section where you can select between Ambient, Reactive, Immersive and Disable settings.
  • The Aurora Only mode of old is now Vibrant Aurora.
  • The Synesthesia Only mode of old is now Immersive Synesthesia (Note that when this is selected, Aurora is temporarily disabled due to the effect not looking so good).
  • The Aurora Synesthesia mode of old is now Vibrant Aurora with Reactive Synesthesia placed on top.
  • There are now three visualisation settings for Synesthesia as apposed to the one of old (now called Natural). The new modes change which colours respond to what frequencies, with Liquid using Green to represent bass, and Energy using blue to represent bass.
  • All visualisations have been modified to respond better to treble frequencies, so for Natural more blue should be visible.
  • Have made stereo effects more pronounced by making reactive modes emit pulses from left/right as well as front.
  • Introduced a settings menu with options for adjusting Aurora's white balance, and Synesthesia's light sensitivity.
  • White Balance introduces more yellow into the lights in order to make white appear less blue.
  • Light Sensitivity adjusts the sensitivity of Synesthesia so that light effects will be visible regardless of the volume level of a piece of music.
  • Introduced option for user to disable Vista/Win7 Aero in order to get Aurora working, or disable Aurora to keep fancy transparencies.

I'm sure there are numerous more changes I've made, but these are the most substantial.

Still to do:
  • Add custom visualisation option.
  • Add ability to save/load settings automatically, to save people having to keep selecting their preferred modes. This will replace the current command-line switches.
  • Increase quality of Aurora mode when playing movies and games.
  • Improve Aurora so that it will work when Aero is enabled.
  • Reinitialise Synesthesia after computer has entered/exited standby.
  • Prevent buildup of delay in Synesthesia mode after hours of usage.

These improvements are going to be a long time coming I'm afraid, particularly the fix for Aero compatibility (if its even possible). Until that time comes, I hope people will enjoy the new features and options that this version brings. Also please report any immediate problems you encounter, especially if they are not in the previous version.

Thanks for all the support, and I hope all of you amBX users enjoy this update!

Will test this weekend, but first celebrate my birthday. Thanks for your gift ;). You might want to edit your first post in this thread so it contains a link to the latest version of the software.
Take a look at the Wiki for all those questions you didn't dare ask.

i've had the honor to test this version for over a week now, and it's really lots and lots better than the previous one. Just one bug that i came across and that me and zodius already talked about, but nevermind that, you probably wouldn't ever even notice!

Thanks zodius for this great app :)

He he, no problem. Hope you enjoy it :D

Thanks for the suggestion, I've now updated the first page with the link, but directing people here for the current info about it.

Interesting, it seems whatever changes I've made have fixed the FMOD problem, and I'm guessing your not getting any other messages, such as Synesthesia modes can't operate?

I've had Teh_uberer assist with testing out the adaptive sensitivity mode, particularly seeing has he is one of the few people with a volume issue. Also he's assisted with making the Aero disabing a bit more user friendly, so thanks a lot :D!

Thanks zodius for this great app :)

No problem, all I hope is that people enjoy using this as much as I do, and really get the most out of their amBX lighting kits.

Ok,
The new version is really great ;)
- The problem with the tool tips or menus (flashing lights) is gone. Great job!
- Found an interessting thing about the Windows Media Center: You are right, if it's full screen, you can't take a print screen picture. But as soon as it looses focus (bring a small explorer in front/sth like that) it works. Have to start googling a second about this behaviour. Would be great, if it will ever work... the most important thing about a HTPC not working (also not working with amBX default apps) is frustrating.
But thanks a lot for the new version!

I'm glad about the tooltip problem.

As for HTPC's, I believe that AS is quite conservative when it comes to performace, its the rest of amBX that makes it impractical on those kind of machines. As for it not working with other amBX programs, the only way that I resolve that is to incorporate AS into the current Audio and FX Gaming gens, requiring that I work for amBX Ltd (you never know, one day :P).

Hey Zodius!
My Englisch isnt that good, but i try to write:D
First, THANK YOU! When i bouhgt my AMBX, i hoped, that i can visualize my music. And then i found this Thread.
I tested already Version 1.04. This was great, because, it was easy to use, because there was nothing to set up:D

Now i got the new Version 1.05.
The Auora Mode is just to Visualize the Screen, right?
The Synthesia is to visualize the Music. So if i just want to visualize my music, i turn Auora Mode off?!?!

What are the differcenes between Ambient, Reactive, and Immersive? I don't know which mode is the right for me:S

And what for are the visualisation presets? Where is the difference there, between the different modes?
And what for ist the light sensivity and white balance?

Sorry for all that questions, but i dont know, how to set up the programm. There are sooo mandy different combinations:S

/edit: Sorry, i think i should read you changelog first:D Most questions are mentioned there:D
/edit2: Okay, now i know what modes are good for. But i cant decide which on I should take:(

Neet little options.....especially those "settings" .......

Last things I miss within are.....
1. Vistas Aero
2. Icon sharing with "illuminate" (one icon - one menue)
3. EVR support

Nevertheless great work ZODIUS!

All the new options are to give greater flexibility to people so they can get the effects they want.

My suggestion to you is to play around with the main options to see what you prefer, but as a general rule, if you just want sound-to-light effects, go into the Synesthesia menu and select Immersive. Similarly if you just want Screen-to-light effects, go into the Synesthesia menu and disable Sound-to-Light. As for the visualisation presets, I recommend you stick with Natural, although I also find Energy to be rather cool for dance/techno music.

All the other settings are there for people who want more choice, but the average person shouldn't need to adjust the white balance or light sensitivity at all.

The Vista Aero problem is one thing I'm determined to resolve, but it is likely to be a long time coming. Sharing the icon with illuminate won't be possible, unless I introduce Illuminate like options into my program as an Aurora mode (a possibility), for now you'll have to use one or the other. EVR support is a new one for me, and without the expertise of how it (and other HD content) work, I can't begin to make Aurora work.

Thanks for your comments, and I'm glad you're all liking it.
