Flash video and ambx

Postby Tonus » Fri Sep 23, 2011 12:39 pm

As more and more content is delivered online via flash e.g. BBC iPlayer, I have had the chance to thoroughly enjoy the ambx experience, to the extent, I barely use traditional means of watching TV. However, that has come to a grinding halt.

Ambx works with flash video up to version 10.0.45.2 of the flash software. I was quite happy to resist upgrading to the latest version -despite the apparent security concerns- as I enjoyed my ambx and internet TV far too much. However, content providers (notably the BBC) are now supplying flash video that requires version 10.1.x.x to play. And so, my ambx tv fun has suddenly stopped :(

Does anyone know of any workaround or anything? Or does any of the ambx people know if a solution is being worked on?
What can be so different between the 2 versions of flash that suddenly makes it invisible to ambx software?

This is a huge part of the ambx functionality to me, so, for me, it is quite important. I'm hoping that together with you guys we might find some solution.

I've been wondering about that myself.

I believe that there was a really stupid workaround, but I can't seem to get it working now. The Steam overlay web browser. As in, the crappy web browser that you can run while in-game using Steam. Yeah, it can run flash and it's completely amBX capable, but I can't seem to get flash running full screen right now. I'm sure it used to work. I'd check on the Steam forums, but they're down after a hacker attack.

I'm curious if the Opera 12 alpha builds work with amBX, it's meant to be fully hardware accelerated, GUI and everything, I'll have to give it a try at some point.

Edit: Ooh, so close, the current Opera 12 Alpha actually fully works for webpages, but not flash videos unfortunately. In fact, if you boot a flash video, amBX gets stuck on the last colour it was showing until you quit. Such a shame, so close.

Maybe the AmBX folks could look into Opera integration...
Please add a white balance setting!

Have you tried using glOw or Aurora Synesthesia ?

It might not be ideal but could be worth a go until someone else has a chance to get amBX working with Flash normally again...
Sometimes updates to Flash cause problems with all kinds of things... if you right click and play with options you may be able to get it working (selecting or deselecting "Hardware Acceleration" may work). Of course if you're not comfortable in doing that I'd recommend using either glOw or AS as linked above :)
