amBX on an Openelec\XBMC Live HTPC?

Postby PerfectBlue97 » Sun Apr 15, 2012 9:35 am

Is it possible to use amBC lights on an HTPC that's running Openelec\XBMC Live?

I'm running an HTPC with Openelec - a media player only version of XBMC that runs instead of Windows, rather than as a Windows program - is it possible to use amBC on my system?

yes but it requires some work to get it going, it also requires a decent htpc, i used to use it on my htpc it worked fine with everthing except full 1080p vid's which the ambx caused to stutter sometimes. i have a link somewhere with a guide, here is one for openelec's version of xbmc http://openelec.tv/forum/44-cool-things ... me-theater

here is one for standalone xbmc :http://www.lockstockmods.net/2010/05/22/xbmc-live-linux-with-ambx/

i have followed both guide's and they both work but please bear in mind the guides are not 100 percent noob proof they require some knowledge on your part. enjoy

What counts as a decent system these days?

I'm running a Zotac zBox AD02 with 4gb of Ram. It boots directly into Openelec (Rather than booting into Ubuntu or Windows and then running XBMC). Is this enough, or do you mean that you need a fully speced modern PC.

It's a pity there is no 100% pre built system (EG software and hardware, with no assembly required). There are a lot of people like me who'd love one of these systems, but who are intimidated at the thought of putting them together.

the zotac box should be plenty enough, i have an emachines er1401 and that runs it fine. you can get pre built systems but you just have to look around, the new version of xbmc has the ambx softare pre configured i think, but you will have to double check :)

Can you recommend a pre-built system. Or give me any hints where to look?

sorry for the late reply, it depends on how much your willing to spend, i didn't have a lot when i brought mine so i got an er1401. even though its cheaper then some of the others i have never struggled to play any content. it only struggles with ambx with files over 30gb and its only a stutter now and again. it is abit harder to get now though as they where dirt cheap and pretty much sold out, another option is something like the pulse box which is all pre built and pre configured http://www.pulse-eight.com/store/produc ... re-pc.aspx no need to mess about with anything accept ambx ofc. i hope this helps you .
