Have you done anything unusual with your amBX?

Postby rogmi » Fri Sep 30, 2011 11:00 pm

Have you modified your amBX equipment or used it in anything else?
With all the amBX sets that have been produced, I'm sure some people must have found ways to adapt them

As an example, Efroggy has designed a driver interface PCB to plug into the wallwasher to drive LED strips.

If you have and would like others to know about it, please let me know and I can post details of it on my site (such as a link to your site or wherever) if you like. I've just added the amBX additions page back to my site (unfortunately it disappeared during an earlier update and I didn't notice it!) and the link to Efroggy's work is there.

I haven't modified it, but I've used it in conjunction with other devices such as the Instapark laser generator:

Meanwhile I hand wired a sidelight RGB LED-Driver channel, based on Rogmi’s schematics.
It works quite well with 0,5 meter RGB LED Panel Light supplier with common anode.
Trying to adapt this circuit to the wall washer, showed me some dramatic differences of the driving voltages. They are now in the 0 to 5 Volt LED Tube range, whereby all inputs set to 0 Volt means white.
I am trying to make a common circuit where led strip 12v only a few jumper settings will put the LED Driver in wall washer- or sidelight mode.
One thing is not clear to me, it’s the sensor. What is the purpose of this sensor circuit?
I’ll keep you informed.

I've not got round to listing all the voltages for the wallwasher / wallwasher lights yet, but there is a difference in the way that the wallwasher lights are driven. The wallwasher lights are fed directly from the LED decoder, whereas the sidelights have an interface which buffer the output. Presumably this is to make it more reliable for the longer distance covered - several feet (and indeed much longer if a sidelight extension cable is used), compared to the few inches for the wallwasher light.

I'm not quite sure of the purpose of the sensor. It is a photosensor that is connected directly to the CPU and has a variable output depending on the light brightness. I don't know if the CPU is programmed to actually use it or not. From what I could see, it didn't seem to make any difference to the light output whether it was open or covered up. If there are any differences, I think they're only subtle.

Not sure.

What I do know for sure if that you cannot have any red lights on the front of your vehicle. (assuming you are in the United States) A red light on the front of your vehicle is classified as impersonating law enforcement.

With regards to lighting on your car I think the best course of action is to ask either someone in law enforcement (if they say it's fine make sure you get it in writing). Or someone that deals with motor vehicles licencing or something like that.

However for people in the UK I found this http://www.quotea.co.uk/modified/modifications-and-the-law.asp
